"Hey, how about letting me take this beauty for a spin?" he asked, running his fingers along the top edge of the Mustang's fender. "What year is it, a '67?"
"It's a '68 and no, you can't drive it." I stuffed my hands into my jeans pockets, jamming my car keys further down.
"You sure? There's this beautiful spot in the mountains that overlooks the entire valley. On a night like this the stars shine brighter there than anywhere else you've ever stargazed. Let me take you there. You won't regret it, it's breathtaking." He moved closer to me as he spoke, his physical proximity as hypnotic as his words. I turned away to break the spell.
"Which one is your car?" I asked, glancing at the vehicles parked on either side of the street.
"Believe it or not, I'm still driving my Mom's 2003 Mitsubishi. Not a classic, like this beauty. It's old and it spends most of its time in the shop. It's over at Burt's Auto right now, and to be honest, I don't have the money to fix it." He frowned and looked away, seemingly embarrassed by his admission. "I Ubered here. If I keep doing that, I'll never be able to save money." He chuckled half-heartedly.
I held my breath, worried he was going to ask me to do the repairs. I had an agreement with Burt: I stayed away from cars and he sent all other mechanical repairs my way.
"You're not really going to deny me the chance to take this baby for a ride, are you?"
"Do you even know how to drive stick?" I asked, my resistance weakening. He grinned, sensing my attitude change.
"As a matter fact, I do." He held out his hand for the keys. I stared at him, still debating whether or not I was okay with this. Sighing, I pulled the keys out of my pocket.
"You better treat her right. You strip her gears and I'll kick your ass." He laughed, which annoyed me. "I'm not joking. I can do it."
"I have no doubt," he said, placing his hand over his heart. "I promise to treat her with all the respect she so greatly deserves."
I relinquished the keys, comforting myself with the thought that if he messed with my car, I would simply hold Dominion over him. I would force him to pull over and let me drive, and no one would fault me for it.
Jason opened the passenger door for me, closing it firmly once I had settled into the seat. He skipped around to the driver's side and settled himself behind the steering wheel, starting the motor with a turn of the key. He flashed a grin. "Listen to that engine purr!"
He took a second to get acquainted with the controls, turning on the lights and adjusting the rear-view mirror.
"What happened to the shoulder strap?" he asked as he fastened the seatbelt across his lap.
"The '68 didn't have them, so take it easy."
I watched him closely as he released the emergency brake, stepped on the clutch and shifted into first gear.
